Discussion 1.4: Policing Strategies and Homeland Security
As with all organizations, police roles and strategies continue to evolve. This discussion will provide an overview of the general policing strategies utilized over the past 20 years. Although, since that tragic day on 9/11/01, there have been many changes to policing strategies and roles. You will be investigating what impact, if any, the addition of Homeland Security has had on traditional policing strategies.
Instructions and Supporting Material
Review the journal article, A New Era of Policing: An
Examination of Texas Police Chiefs’ Perceptions of Homeland
Security.
Read about the three “Styles of Policing” described in
Chapter 6 of your textbook.
Watch the video, The USA PATRIOT Act of 2001. Consider the
role and evolution of the Patriot Act and how that might alter a
traditional policing strategy.
Write a summary of the policing strategy, provide an example
of the strategy, and finally expand on what impact the addition of
Homeland Security has had on that strategy.
Change the subject line of your post to reflect the policing
strategy you are discussing.
Go back and read your classmates policing strategies
discussion and add a meaningful comment to AT LEAST two of their
posts.
Meaningful comments require analysis on your part. For example, share some information about how the content posted is the same or different from what you have seen or experienced or pose questions that further and deepen the discussions. You can bring in new examples or challenge the classmate to further ones thinking or position.
Statements like, I agree or That is a good point do not demonstrate thinking and analysis, and are not considered meaningful comments.
If your thinking is well developed and meaningful, it does not necessarily mean your post has to be long in length.
