During your practicum, determine what clinical problem or issue the organization is facing. Discuss two implications for nursing.     

One of the big problems I am seeing during my practicum is fall rates among the patients. Even with the advancements in technology and the increased research about falls we are still seeing a high rate of falls. When a patient falls it increases their length of stay and increases the cost by enormous numbers. In a recent study they seen that over a year period they was over 300,000 falls in the hospital setting which increased their length of stay by at least a 2% increase. (Bouldin,2014) The falls in the work place can be contributed to the lack of nurses, increase in infectious, or just the nursing staff not putting the correct precautions for the patients. I’ve noticed that many nurses when doing their initial assessments and they notice someone that could be a fall risk. They don’t start the correct fall precautions in a timely manner. I’ve also seen nurses get patients from surgery and hook them up to the vital machine and just walk out. If that’s my patient I’m staying with them until I know how they are. I’ve seen patients wake up and try to get up by themselves and fall. Which will causes fractures and increased stays at the hospital which also increases their risk for infections.      Reference:     Bouldin, J.
