They were the first Native Americans whoencountered the Spanish. The Spanish easily turned them to Christianity because they did nothave a specific religion. Once the Spanish found Santo Domingo which was one of the towns inthe Caribbean island Hispaniola, they started forcing the Taino people to work as slaves a movewhich resulted in deaths. A good example was in 1495 when the Taino leaders brought tens ofthousands of Taino warriors to fight the Spaniards. They did not expect the Spaniards to havebetter weapons like guns, swords, and dogs which they used to kill them. Many Tainos werekilled during that battle a move which made them accept their status as Spanish subjects. TheTainos had to serve their new masters by providing cotton, food, and gold.
